light as space pt.2

the top image is a project called Dune 4.1 by Studio Roosegaarde from rotterdam - it was an interactive installation in the maastunnel pedestrian/bike way running underneath rotterdam's harbor. it's been adapted as a permanent installation on the banks of the river underneath which it was originally placed.

the latter three images are all from The Living - the first is of an installation in Seoul that maps real-time data about air quality and "public interest in the environment" on the plexi panels seen in the image. the second and third image are from a project entitled "Amphibious Architecture" which purports to establish a means of feedback between new yorkers and the water by which they are surrounded.

all of these projects employ both light and either external or immediate data sources but aren't quite all the way "there". the studio roosegaarde projects produce amazing spaces, as i can attest, but while their interactivity is whimsical, they stop short of meaningful engagement with the city/their environment. the living's projects are perhaps the inverse - they involve the representation of complex sets of data, and are extremely sophisticated, but fall somewhat short of being compelling in an experiential sense.
